Spots around the city that rekindled my love for reading

By Eunice V. Soriano
Whenever I feel unmotivated to open up a new book, I always find that switching my reading spot always helps. Visiting new places and getting lost in the pages while I’m there has helped restore my love for reading. And amidst the hustle and bustle of Toronto, there are many spots in the city where you can do just that. From cafes, to libraries, to parks, these are five reading spots that I hold near and dear to my heart.
1. Toronto Reference Library

Having been around for 115 years, the Toronto Reference Library has become a cornerstone in Toronto’s literary scene. Whenever I visit the library, I am always blown away by the beauty of its five stories — each offering a glimpse into the lives of other booklovers. This has numerous desks and seating arrangements to indulge in a good book—whether that be one you brought from home or one from the library’s many bookshelves.
2. Flying Books at Neverland
Down at Queen St., you can find Flying Books at Neverland—a small independent bookstore in Toronto. Though it is one of the newer spots on this list, it has become one of my most cherished spots to read and study. The ambient lighting emitted from all corners of the shop brings me a strong sense of comfort. And being surrounded by displays and shelves of books inspires me to read even more!
3. Imperial Pub
Imperial Pub is a reading spot that I recently discovered, but it has quickly become a favourite of mine! One might think that it only functions as a restaurant and bar, but if you keep going up its stairs you will find a mini library and lounge. The first time I came, I was delighted by the idea that I could read while feasting on the delicious array of food that they offer on the menu.
Coupled with jazz music playing in the background and greenery encompassing the walls, the Imperial Pub acts as an oasis from the chaos of the real world—making it a great spot to engross myself in a good book.
4. Harbour Square Park
If you want to switch it up from the classic indoor setting, why not try Harbour Square Park? From tables to benches overlooking Lake Ontario, there are many amazing spots to relax and read. It’s undeniable that the view is breathtaking and as the seasons get warmer, this will definitely be a spot I will keep coming back to.
5. Nabulu Coffee
Located in the heart of downtown Toronto close to Yonge and Wellesley is Nabulu Coffee. Not only does it offer a sweet selection of pastries and drinks, but it is a great place to immerse yourself in a book. The cafe offers ample seating at both the front and back to sit down and unwind. And the warm-toned antiques and decor foster a calming ambience making it the perfect reading spot!
