Taking in downtown Toronto through a brand new lens
By Sam Dubiner
I think that after living in Toronto for most of my life, I’ve grown immune to the city’s spectacle. So, in an attempt to see the downtown in a new light, I switched to shooting monochrome in camera! By doing so, I unified my light sources, which let me focus on the lines, shapes and details that define a space from a stronger design perspective. From there, I first set out to frame light emerging from dark spaces, and then, second, within the negative space of a layout. Since I was shooting in RAW, I could still reintroduce colour, isolating hues and tones I found appealing and further colourgrading when they didn’t fit my vision.
The result of my little perspective shift and exercise is “Jelly Tones”—a collage of condos, clubs, workshops and empty office spaces, framed as a hand where light and colour break through structured negative space.
